The AE-86 was first introduced to the states in 1983. There were two versions to hit showroom floors. The SR5 and the GT-S. The SR5 had the basic trim options, 85HP (horsepower) from a single cam 1.6 liter engine.

Then there was the GT-S. The GT-S had a performance gear option, with a limited-slip differetial, 5 speed manual, with a twin cam inline 4 engine. The AE-86 had a very small chance of staying bone stock. Most modders removed Toyota TVIS ( Toyota Variable Iduction System ) for their own choice of throttle bodies. Also, they went for internal strengthening such as shorter stroke crak, Titanium connecting rods ad pneumatic valve springs. Some people even went as far as swapping the engine for the then current MR2 engine. Why do that when with the small engine mods done the GT-S you could easily get 15,000 RPM's out of the AE-86.
